In early July 2026, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Vancouver, marking the first visit to Canada by a Philippine President since 2015. Acknowledging 77 years of formal diplomatic relations, the two leaders officially elevated their bilateral relationship into a Strategic Partnership.
The elevation signifies a forward-looking action plan bridging defense, trade, and sustainability. Bolstered by a massive one-million-strong Filipino diaspora in Canada, the visit also highlighted shared democratic values, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral ruling (finalized on July 12, 2016), a major cornerstone of this Strategic Partnership is maritime security.
During the visit, the Philippine leadership reiterated that defending territorial integrity in the West Philippine Sea remains an "existential issue." Canada reaffirmed its unwavering support for a rules-based order in the region and the strict enforcement of international maritime law.
