President Marcos Signs RA 12326: Extending Barangay & SK Terms to 5 Years and Moving Elections to 2028

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially signed Republic Act No. 12326, a landmark law that postpones the scheduled Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). More significantly, the law extends the term of office for all elected Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five (5) years. The next regular BSKE has been moved to the second Monday of November 2028.

🎯 Key Provisions of RA 12326
The President emphasized that this extension provides officials with "additional time to be accountable to the people," allowing for better continuity in local programs and services.
The term of office for all elected Barangay and SK officials is now fixed at five (5) years. The next elections will be in November 2028, and every five years thereafter.
Barangay officials are limited to a maximum of two (2) consecutive terms in the same position. SK officials are limited to serving only one (1) term.
Due to the extension, incumbent officials are considered to have completed one full term. Those currently on their final term cannot run for the same position in 2028.
The DILG, along with other agencies, is mandated to institutionalize continuing capacity-building and training programs for all Barangay and SK officials.
